Book Blogger Hop - 10/5 - 10/11

Book Blogger Hop

QUESTION:

Banned Books Week ends on the 6th. How do you feel about books being challenged to be banned from libraries or schools? Have you read any banned books?

MY ANSWER:

I think it is sad some really good books have been banned.

I have read many banned books that were part of required reading when I was in high school.

A few I have read as required reading are:

Animal Farm
Of Mice and Men
To Kill a Mockingbird
1984
The Lord of the Flies
Grapes of Wrath
The Great Gatsby
Catcher in the Rye
For Whom the Bell Tolls

Gone With the Wind - read outside of school
In Cold Blood - read outside of school

Can you tell what year I graduated?  :)  Ha ha - a long time ago.

I will be on my way home to Pennsylvania Friday at some point so if I am not active, you will know why I haven't been commenting.

  1. I read most of those in school too. I generally don't go out of my way to read banned books but I don't avoid them either.

  2. I haven't read a lot of banned books, but I think it's ridiculous. Why do they ban books? For really sad reasons.

    Have a great weekend!

  3. After googling what the 100 top banned books were I found I had only read three of them, not because they are banned books, but because most of the banned books were not in genres I read.

  5. So glad I found your blog! We really do have a lot of reading interests in common -- and I LOVE your pictures of Scotland -- I traveled there earlier this year & it was so amazing :)

I've subscribed to your feed, can't wait to see what you're reading next.

Also I'm quite impressed you've already reached your GoodReads goal for 2012, I've gotten a bit behind!

  6. It's sad that some of the banned books are really beautiful books that people should read.

Also, I didn't realize In Cold Blood was banned. I loved that book! Disturbing but so fascinating.

  8. Banning books in general seems like a very sad thing to do, really. Those that occupy their minds with what to prohibit others access too are sad, sad people, I say.

Have a great weekend, and thanks for stopping by!

  9. Thanks for your thoughtful comment on my blog http://thethingsyoucanread.blogspot.com/. I too feel as you do-censorship is bad. If you don't like the book stop reading. If you don't like what's on TV stop watching...I did, and now I have more time for reading and blogging. I have read so many of the books on the banned list. Two of my favorites are Gone With the Wind and To Kill a Mockingbird. I am now follower #1286. Again, thanks for following my blog.

  10. I've read most of these as well--though I had surprisingly few of them assigned in school!

  11. I remember reading Lord of the Flies in 8th grade and boy did I hate it and wish it was banned. Now, I can appreciate the message behind the book.

  12. Hi Elizabeth,
I have read all those same banned books as you, except Cod Blood! I remember getting sent home from a horse-riding camp, in utter disgrace, when they caught me reading Lord of the Flies! Ah yes, that dates me too, doesn't it?

  17. Excellent blog you have here but I was curious about if you knew of any community forums that cover the same topics talked about in this article? I’d really like to be a part of online community where I can get advice from other experienced individuals that share the same interest. If you have any suggestions, please let me know.
