Book Beginnings - 10/3/14

*Please join Rose City Reader every Friday to share the first sentence (or so) of the book you are reading, along with your initial thoughts about the sentence, impressions of the book, or anything else the opener inspires. Please remember to include the title of the book and the author's name.  *Taken directly from Rose City Reader's Blog Page.

Two Halloween Giveaways on my blog until next week if you want to stop.

This week's book beginnings comes from CROOKED RIVER by Valerie Geary.

"We found the woman floating facedown in an eddy where Crooked River made a slow bend north, just a stone skip away from the best swimming hole this side of anywhere.?

Love the cover, don't you?  I like what I have read already.

Books From Last Week and that I wanted to share.

Both were not my favorites, but I hope you make your own decision about them.  :)

RUTH'S JOURNEY by Donald McCaig

This book is about Mammy from Gone With The Wind and is a bit difficult to follow.

The book didn't get good until the last part of the book.

Review is in the book's title.

Definitely a different writing style.

THIS IS THE WATER by Yannick Murphy.

Review is in the book's title.

What are you reading that you can't keep to yourself?  :)

  13. Hi Elizabeth,

All three books you feature and their authors, are new to me.

I am a sucker for a good mystery, so 'This Is the Water' quite appeals to me, although I see from goodreads, that you didn't rate it too highly. Other blogging friends have also criticised the quality of the writing and storyline, although have given it slightly higher ratings, so I might just have to try it, to satisfy my own curiosity!

Your first lines this week, would definitely keep my reading on, a mureder right from the first word is not something to be passed by lightly!

Thanks for sharing and have a good weekend,

    Yvonne.

  14. Sorry about the typos and grammar errors, I thought I had double checked it, but obviously not!

It is only 6am though! I need coffee!

  15. It's ok, Yvonne. I do hate when that happens to me, though, so I know how you feel.

I hope you do read This is the Water to tell me your thoughts. The writing was good, just odd. The storyline had too much about swimming and love affairs instead of the mystery. :)

Now...Crooked River is very good so far.

    Thanks for stopping.

  24. that first one sounds good! Got my interest right away. I love a good mystery.
I've been reading a lot of blogs -- it seems I only have time for that and no actual books these days.
Plus, I have been trying to spark my own writing too.
