Book Blogger Hop - 5/22 - 5/28

 Question of the Week:

Why would you stop reading a book? Too long, wrong genre, bad language, not what you expected, or something totally different?

My Answer:

I have stopped reading a book because of language, sexual content, no action, not of interest by page 100, and the genre.

By wrong genre, I mean that I didn't know it was going to be a genre I didn't care for and it turns out to be.

I very rarely stop reading a book, but if it happens those are the main reasons.

Do you stop or continue because you said you would read it?

  1. I gave myself permission quite some time ago to read what I want to read. If I'm not enjoying a book, I put it down. You've probably heard of the infamous '50 page rule'. I subscribe to that, mostly. Honestly, life's too short and I'm not going to get to read everything I'd like to anyway. Why keep plodding through a book that I'm not enjoying? Even if I said I would read it.

    1. Exactly....I actually have put two books down this past week.

Too may books I want to read, and I can't waste time on something I don't like.

      Thanks for stopping, Kay.

  2. I rarely stop reading a book too and think it's something I should work on.

    1. I have been more selective as well as being more apt to put the book down if it has too much sinister content.

Thanks for stopping, Kathy. See you soon at the BEA.

  3. I tend to stop reading a book if it doesn't make sense or if the protagonist is tstl (too stupid to live). :)

  4. Page 100 is the magic number for me too. If a book hasn't grabbed me by then it's probably not going to. :-)

  5. I give about 40-50 pages before deciding a book isn't for me, for various reasons. There are so many amazing stories out there, I don't want to spend time reading something I'm just not enjoying. If it is something I received for review on my blog, I will let the author or book tour organizer know that the book just wasn't for me and offer to post a spotlight or guest post rather than a negative review.

    1. I do the same, Brooke. The author or publisher are always very nice about it.

I go with spotlights too. :)

Thanks for your comment and for stopping, Brooke.

  6. Explicit sexual content and language is a huge one for me, I can't bear it Elizabeth. I wish books were flagged with warnings in terms of explicit content.

    Wishing you a lovely weekend!

    1. They should be flagged. I had one book that had so much bad language and degrading of women, I just wouldn't continue.

      Thanks for stopping, Claudia.

  7. Great post :) I'm the same. If I pick up a fantasy book and it turns out to be sexual content every few pages, I'll put it down. It's not what I picked the book up for!

If it's just a boring book I'll continue reading it so I can review it. (I know, there are so many books out there I should know better! I just can't help it). It's extremely rare I'll put down a book. Part of me thinks life's too short, there's so many books! But the other part of me thinks there may be part of the book later on I'll miss out on :-/

    Have a great week! :D

  8. I'm like Amy. I think that if I just keep reading maybe it'll get better. So a book has to be horrible for me not to finish. Thanks for stopping by my hop
