We meet the Book Woman of Troublesome Creek again but not on her route.
She and her husband are in prison because they violated the laws of no white person being allowed to marry a blue.
They both are in adjoining prisons, but they don't see each other.
Cussy luckily gets the job of prison librarian for the women and at times for the men.
She thought she would see her husband when she was in the men's prison library, but that didn't happen.
We follow Cussy as she longs for her life as the packhorse librarian, but is thankful she has books to help pass the time she must spend incarcerated.
The book also addresses the privilege and opportunities of being able to read and the plight of the prisoners in the cruel situations they have been put in.
Another excellent, beautifully written, but heartbreaking read by Ms. Richardson. 5/5
Thank you to the publisher for a copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
