When Do You Decide to Continue or Stop Reading A Book?
For me, Chapter 15 is more than likely the point where I decide I will continue or not continue.
It also depends on how long the chapters are so I am going to say Page 100 can also be my stopping or continuing point.
What about you?
Hmmm...I think I decide sooner than that...but you are right...it depends on the book and its size.
ReplyDeleteYes...Chapter 15 wasn’t definitive enough so that’s why I went to a page number. :)

Three chapters - if the book doesn't grab by then, I don't continue.
ReplyDeleteChapters are a good measure.

Interesting question. I’ve stopped books at page 120 and page 2. It just hits me that I don’t want to read any more.
ReplyDeleteLove your book gauge, Lloyd.

I guess it depends on whether or not parts of the book are good...in those cases, I will keep reading for about 100 pages. Otherwise, I might ditch the book after 50 pages.
ReplyDeleteYes....100 pages seems to be the norm.

Elizabeth, I am facing this dilemma right now! My library book is almost due--should I renew it, or return it. I don't know what to do!
ReplyDeleteAre you enjoying it? If so, renew it. :)

I try to struggle through about a third of the book. If it doesn't grab me then, I might set it aside for a couple of weeks just to be sure it's the book and not my mood. But once I've decided it's not something I'll stick with, I might read the last chapter or epilogue. Then, when I realize I just-don't-care what happens to the characters, I make the book disappear.
ReplyDeleteGood plan...a mood may make a difference.
DeleteLOL on your comment about just not caring about the characters. Disappearing works for me too.

An author once told me if the book doesn't grab hold by page 20, that it's not a good sign so I stop at approx. page 50.
ReplyDeleteReally?
DeletePage 20 seems a bit too low. I think your 50 works out better.
